Other accomplices of these crimes are listed in the file below…
It all started with a handful of hair-brained ideas from a few insane individuals with nothing better to do than to annoy their neighbors with blaring instruments and insulting lyrics. What follows is a somewhat chronological disorder of the songs, what inspired them, and who was responsible for the lyrics.
"SESSIONS" was recorded with a portable boom box within the years of 1986 and 1987. It all started in the living room of Baron Von Cluke's, which spread to his garage, and the bedrooms of Walter and Just John. The following is everything you need to know about the contents of this release;
CRISSY / MISSY (Baron Von Cluke, Just John, Joey Arcade)
This was the Tabletops' first song ever written! This is the snowball that would start the avalanche that would, surprisingly, last a decade! Written about two young girls who took BVC and JJ on an emotional ride of disaster, this is their relationship. Crissy/Missy, although their first song, was never recorded for Sessions, it appears on a future release down the Tabletops time line. The song's lyrics were scribed on a stained paper towel in JA's handwriting, now valued at over $100.
HAIR (Baron Von Cluke)
Back to the insulting lyrics, BVC wrote this one about Joey Arcade. JA, at the time was proven to have more hair than bigfoot, hence the title. The remainder of Tabletops and their close friends thought this funny, but prayed that no song about themselves soon followed.
APPLE TOO (Baron Von Cluke, Walter)
One of the most bizarre songs ever imagined. Written in a classroom during high school, BVC and Walter decided to put aside their studious efforts to pursue something much more valuable... rhyming fruit! The idea came about when BVC's father had too much to drink at a family gathering. His father donned BVC's McDonalds work uniform, then proceeded to put on a show forever captured on home video. Little did he know that he would be the lone inspiration for this timeless classic that lasts around 43 seconds.
C.M.I.T.P.B. (Just John, Evil Ed)
Communist Marshmallows In The Paper Bag. During a stay at a local hospital, JJ came up with a very original song title and some lyrics. After his release from the medical facility, he consulted with Evil Ed, a long time friend of TableTops. Together they concocted the entire C.M.I.T.P.B. tune during astronomy class in high school (are we noticing a trend here?). This Tabletops hit his pounded out live in 35 seconds or less if air hose permits.
STOP! (Joey Arcade)
Unfortunately, JA didn't even realize that he wrote and produced this masterpiece at the time! If you are one of the few dozens people that have the "Sessions" cassette, you might miss it if you're not careful. This is believed to be the shortest song in musical history, coming in at just under 1 full fledged second!
SWEET DADDY BLUES (Baron Von Cluke, Just John)
First performed in JJ's bedroom, JJ later turned the demanding vocal duties over to BVC for the live recording of "Sessions". BVC plans to have the entire nation jumping up and singing the "Sweet Daddy Blues".
#8 (Baron Von Cluke)
No, it's not INXS! It's BVC's fascination with the number 8. He loves multiplying by 8 and could think of nothing better to do than to pay tribute to his favorite numerical object. BVC recruited JJ and guest star FACE for additional vocals on this one.
FATTEST THING (Baron Von Cluke, Just John)
Written in BVC's bedroom, recorded in JJ's, this song was never played in it's entirety. These 2 idiots couldn't make it through this song with a map. Constantly screwing up the simple lyrics and grade school punk rock guitar, they were laughing too much to finish the song. After a while, a long, long while, JJ through in the towel, opting to mix together parts from 3 takes to form the one not-so-messed-up version that appears on Sessions. This song was recorded with future guest star Bill's guitar, and it is rumored that JJ still owes him a replacement high E string.
IN JIM's MIND (Jim)
Another guest star of Tabletops, Jim takes us on an improvisational journey through his shallow thinking. It is true, these mad words flowed right from the top of his head to the tip of his tongue, which found it's way to the recording of this song. To this day, we still don't know how Walter was able to keep his cool during this event. Little does Jim know, that he will be sought out to reenact this feat on a future TableTops release.
"Sessions" also included other songs not mentioned above. "Bullshit Blues", the only Tabletops instrumental known to exist. "Want It All night", a parody of Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead Or Alive", you have to hear this to believe it! "Spandex Enormity", a song originally recorded by M.O.D. "Wipe-Out", the classic surfing tune that we all know, an ANTHRAX cover, "I'm The Man" complete with all samples played live by the TableTops. Also keep in mind that the entire Sessions cassette was recorded with a total of 1 keyboard and 2 guitars. The "drums" you hear are people improvising with household items and disposable garage goods.
I now take you to the year 1991, a big jump on the calendar, and a huge step for TableTops kind. Bill, putting aside his E string differences, lends Walter his 4 track recorder and drum machine for TableTops to apply technology to their creations. What follows is a collaboration of songs from Sessions and new material to form "WE LIVE IN SPRING HILL AND WE'RE REALLY F#$^%@* BORED!" This 14 track demo release includes newer versions of "Apple Too", "Hair", "C.M.I.T.P.B.", "Fattest Thing", and finally "Crissy / Missy". "#8" was recorded for this release, but never made it to the cassette. The idea came for the album title came to the band because they do and they are.
SAMHAIN's HOUSE (Just John)
This song kicks off "We Live..." You may think this song to be about demons, wizards, death hounds and all other sorts of fantasy type creatures, but behold unbeliever - you are wrong! This tune, remarkably, is about the boys in the band gathering with their friends to play that traditional childhood game; "Demon Pool"... or, "Marco Polo" for you dull types. Each "demon" portrayed in the song is actually about a better player in the game. Bill appears courtesy of Gypsy Bang Gang, his band at the time, to lend his guitar skills for the recording of the only guitar solo in Tabletops history thus far. This song is also the first TT song to be played on the radio! On June 4, 1992, WBUL 93.5 college radio debuted this song along with "Apple Too" and "Daddy's Car".
FAT METAL CHICKS FROM HELL (Just John)
Written back in the time of "Sessions", when 80s metal was king, and hair was as high as the empire State Building, this song was shelved because it was feared that it might offend too many people. In 1991, TT didn't care, and had, since then, offended just about everyone else, so what's a few more? Little did they know, this song would be the one that got them their small, yet loyal following. Good enough to stand the tests of time, this song also appears on the band's next release, and remains the be-all-end-all crowd pleaser. This was the first single that was never to be released.
DADDY'S CAR (Baron Von Cluke)
Written back in the high school days (remember, it's 1991 now, they have much more important things to do) this was a shout out to the "A click" or the "In Crowd" by our lovable BVC. Unable to understand why people can't get along in high school, even though you practically grew up with everyone there, BVC slams them with some hard core reality. BVC takes his firm stand against segregated clicks of all schools with his meaningful yet powerful words of wisdom. Due to a prior commitment to the US Coast Guard, he was unable to record the vocals for this song. He requested that JA take the duty.
MAD MOON (Baron Von Cluke, Just John)
What would happen if a sentient moon went on a killing rampage throughout the known universe? Well let your sci-fi "B" movie ears listen to this! Rivaling the effects of Orson Wells' dramatic tales of space invasion, this song is known to scare the remaining life out of people well over the age of 80.
MONSTER IN MY CLOSET (Just John)
Who knew that a Parker Brothers ouija board "game" would cause so much havoc in young lives. ZOM (Zaratus of Media), a 16th century sorcerer made his point quite clear to the guys of his plan to abolish all mankind through a demonic portal anchored to the bedroom closet of Just John. Much white magic and symbols of good were used to make this recording possible. If you hear heavy breathing coming from your closet - don't say we didn't warn you!
MR. & MRS. SMITH (Just John)
Remember that one house in your neighborhood that scared all you little kids? Those people that lived there that terrified you? This song pays homage to that family. An evil so corrupt that it runs from the parents through the children to the dog. Speaking of dog, that "bark" you hear in the background is the one and only Walter. Pay very close attention to the "Sha-Na-Na" impersonation by BVC at the end of the song.
EAT YOUR MOTHER ALIVE (Just John)
DISCLAIMER: This song in no way promotes the youth of the world to go running about eating mothers once they hear this song. Tabletops will not be held responsible for any such actions! JA loved singing so much on "Daddy's Car" that he forced JJ at gunpoint to share the vocal duties on this one for a magical duet.
This song is a wake up call for people that think heavy metal is nothing but a bunch of long-haired druggies running around biting the heads of bats. The namefor this song came from a TV episode of "Spitting Image" during a Ronald Regan skit. The name "Cerebral Hemorrhage", the title of the band's independent record label, also came from this episode.
CHUNKY (FORK OR SPOON?) (Just John)
We hate the commercials, but the food's ok. The first recording of this song features another guest star that goes by the name FloorMatt. His intense backing vocals and high-pitched pre-pubescent scream took the levels right off the recorder, and therefore, took him right off the recording. FloorMatt has since calmed down, and will hopefully make another attempt on the future recording.
NO QUE HABLA DAY (Baron Von Cluke, Just John, Joey Arcade)
Rap? Well, kinda... no... not really. The brain child of 3 people who must've been drunk, "No Que Habla Day" really stretches the limits of the imagination from this band. This marks the first attempt to cross drastically different types of music for their own amusement. The boys in the band blame the reasoning behind this song on the media's saturation of the New Kids On The Block.
SATANIC DOO-WOP (Joey Arcade, Just John)
This monstrosity was written while BVC and Walter were recording the newest version of "Fattest Thing". JA & JJ were laughing their asses off at their latest creation; the TableTops singing accapella! This song was never put on the recording for GOOD REASON. Evil Ed again makes an appearance to lend little talent to this vocal disaster. The band finally decided to lock this one in a safe and bury it 13 feet below Walter's house in concrete.
One other song was written during this time; "Annoying Airhead" was about that one girl you dated that just drove you to drink up a wall. "Annoying Airhead" saw under an hour of rehearsal time along with 2 or 3 live performances, but fear not faithful reader - mystics predict this song to re-surface in the year 1997. Some new cover tunes made it into some set lists as well. "Lethal Tendencies" by Hallows Eve came and stayed throughout all performances, "Symphony Of Destruction" by Megadeth, "N.F.B." from Anthrax, and yes, one more M.O.D. song "Mr. Oofus", which also stays with the band.
1992 brings TableTops to a real studio, well studio equipment crammed into a converted garage, anyway, this marks their first realistic recording attempt; "WE WANT SOUP MADE BY ALLIED TROOPS IN WISCONSIN". The album title came about one night when BVC, JJ and accomplice Argo were driving to the pubs of Tampa, passing the drive-time by playing the world famous "Story Game". Amazingly enough, they came up with this title before the mass consumption of alcoholic beverages. Many beers and rum & cokes were taken during this outing, also, Just John was shocked when the earth moved the floor beneath him which sent him tumbling down flights of stairs in a local club. A new, and faster version of their hit single "Fat Metal Chicks From Hell" appears on this release as well.
HEAVE (Just John)
It's hard to say positive things about this TableTops song, in fact, it's pretty hard to say positive things about any TableTops songs, especially one about vomit and puke, but we'll give it a try.... it was the first song ever written with Drummer Mike, at the first "tryout" for a real drummer, that positive enough? One crazed fan at a live show of 600+ went up on stage with a 32oz cup of mystery meat and "heaved" it all over the mosh pit participants.
HOUSE OF WAX (Just John)
Being the horror & sci-fi fans that they are, this song is about walking through a wax museum and the figures come to life to make you one of them. This song constantly fought it out with "Samhain's House" for the band's opener at shows. "House Of Wax" was frequently played on WXTB 98 Rock's metal show; the Pit, making it the 4th song to hit Florida radio!
COMMANDO TOO-BAD (Just John)
This song is about a buddy of the band. A Marine Corps soldier who did many overseas tours of duty, including the Gulf War. How many metal bands can actually say that there is a company of US military troops actually marching to the cadence of one of their songs???... not many.
SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION (Just John)
A scientific wonder... fact or fiction? The TableTops believe fact. This song is said to be based on a true story, but if you ask Drummer Mike he'll just deny it. That same crazed fan (see "Heave"), followed the band to a show in Oldsmar. He proceeded to through ignited material towards the stage during this song. To this day, we still think he was just trying to set the band members on fire. JJ contributes some guitar work to this one, just to prove that he lacks talent in more than one area.
PLAYDOH-MASOCHIST (Joey Arcade, Just John)
Sex with playdoh - it's new and unique! Lyrics written by the same two laughing maniacs that brought us "Satanic Doo-Wop", all these lyrics were written line after line in 2 minutes. One would shout out a line, the other would follow on cue with one that rhymed, what talent! The boys shred this one out in 2 minutes flat on tape and sometimes, impossibly faster live, much to Walter's dismay! A new fetish for the 90s that probably won't catch on, but hey - don't knock it 'till you try it!
MIND RIDE (Just John)
A large step outside the "norm" for the TableTops, that is if you consider this material normal so far, "Mind Ride" is a huge crowd favorite for those people unlucky enough to witness them live. This is good enough to be on the soundtrack to any more lousy Nightmare on Elm St. sequels, but the boys aren't holding they're breath. If these guys were to play a ballad, this would be it, I think.
That wraps up their 3rd collection of songs. Other songs like the short diddies; "I Dare You" and "We Love Counting" might see recorded daylight in the future, and then again they might not. "Foxy Boxing" is a song about a drunk girl that flushed her keys down the toilet of a rehearsal studio. She then began screaming "where are my keys?" only to get her ass kicked by another girl and left there to deal with her drunk self. "Tourettes Syndrome" is a favorite of the band that will make it to the next recording along with another mash of musical styles "Death Metal Blues". Bill also recorded a demo with Just John called "Our World", which was about saving the environment, who says we're not caring individuals. More covers make their way into some set lists; "Piranha" by Lord Tracy, Ministry's "TV Song" - which gave Joey much laughter due to antics by DM, and unknowingly to the band, Gypsy Bang Gang, their song "Sex Machine", done considerably faster, which led to them speeding it up themselves.
1996... a decade later... who would've known? Not us. Between 1992 and now, there were other projects involved that are related to TableTops, their children if you will. REBECCA, a punk band before punk made it's comeback was started by Bill, Just John and Nycz. REBECCA recorded a 5 song demo on the same 4track and drum machine used for the TableTops. To maintain their innocence, the 3 guys decided to change their names for the Rebecca project and recorded under Xaviar Frostbite, Finnius Fisheater & Harry Manning. PANIC BUTTON including DM and JJ, who actually recorded 3 songs at the same "studio" TableTops used.
1998 - woah baby, 11 years since the first TableTops inception. What follows is more madness about the songs that made it to their professionally recorded 5 song CD entitled "NO SIZE OVER 5" At Panda Productions in Clearwater.
NIGHT OF THE CREEPS (Just John)
Another song for their sci-fi collection, "Night Of The Creeps" is about the movie of the same title. The movie was released in 1986, so it's a bit late for the song to make it on the soundtrack, but we all know in our hearts it belongs there anyway. The song was actually written back in the time of the "Soup" album, it was played only a few times at rehearsal, that's why it doesn't appear on the tape.
EVIL PUMPKIN MEN (Baron Von Cluke)
Back from the Coast Guard (until he flies back out to California again) and back with a vengeance! With a creative mental flow that surpasses his own intelligence, the Baron shocked us all with this terror. Halloween, what a bore… kids aren't scared anymore - at least until they hear this song.
LEAD PIPE (Just John)
When you get mad, get even. Total aggression flowed from the pen as JJ scribbled this one out. This song is turning into a band favorite quite rapidly. From the opening guitar intro it grows into a violent attack on all mosh pit participants everywhere.
THE MONSTER'S BACK (Just John)
A sequel (not a prequel) almost a decade in the making brings us the return of Zaratus Of Media (see "Monster In My Closet"). This time he has thwarted the minds of the band and has them playing his own personal soundtrack during his plans of world domination.
911...PLEASE HOLD (Just John)
We like to think that this title speaks for itself. The music takes the TableTops into the rap/metal genre again. Yes we were doing this stuff before Hard-Corps, Stuck Mojo and Kid Rock - just not as well...
During the pre-production of NO SIZE OVER 5 Joey Arcade left the band to pursue his new super hero career. No longer the mild-mannered Joe we all once loved, he has become the ultimate crime-fighting machine – criminals in Spring Hill beware! After the album's release and a handful of shows around the Tampa Bay Area we had another line change, Scooter left the band to to join the E-Street band and is now on tour with Bruce Springsteen. Other songs from this time period that did not make it to this recording are described below. Fear not true believers, you can still here these songs live at one of the many TableTops shows coming your way.
CHAOS MACHINE (Just John)
Evil, wicked, mean & nasty. Nothing but crunched music so heavy that you'll need 2 hands just to lift the sheet music (if we used any).
PETE THE PARAKEET (Just John)
One night a year he hunts to feed, one night a year to fill his need. Pete terrorizes the countryside by attacking non-believers! Run like you're in a Godzilla monster movie when you hear the churping of death coming from above.
NETWORK DAY (Walter, Just John)
On Sundays some of the guys in the band, along with other close friends, bring their computers over to JJ's house for some good, clean carnage. Hooking up their computers to the network the happily blast each other into oblivion playing video games. Of course, this could only lead to another masterpiece in TableTops' history. This one is written about one of their favorite games Duke Nukem 3D. "Let's Rock!"
GINA, GINA, GINA (Baron Von Cluke)
This is a song about this guy that all he talked about was his girlfriend Gina, which we hated.
PUPPET (Scooter)
A huge retaliation against a woman that did Scooter wrong. Are we noticing a trend here? (editor's note: this song is now no longer played live because we could never get it right in the first place).
It is still 1999 and before the end of the world comes with the new millennium we thought we ought to put out at least one more cd. This decision brings us to (believe it or not) the much anticipated "When She Sits Around The House… She Really Sits Around The House". We forced Drummer Mike to put down the bass and get back behind the drums and recruited Bob the Liquor roadie to fill the bass shoes. Not only is it a return to the ever-loved long album titles, but the actual CD debut of the studio recording "Sits Around The House". This is our next hit single made possible by all you people singing along with us at shows with Florida's rock-power band IRIS CALLING. What follows are the songs that appear on this CD.
SITS AROUND THE HOUSE (Baron Von Cluke, Just John)
This is our new hit single. This song is the most requested TableTops song in history (and the most requested song of other bands too). After months of live shows this song is now forever preserved digitally on CD. There is also a live recording floating around called "LIVE AT LARRY'S HOUSE OF BROKEN CHAIRS", there are only 20 copies of this limited cd available so find one while you can! Thanks again to the boys of Iris Calling for helping us push this one! There is even a clean radio edit version of this song on the CD, so call those radio stations and start requesting!
W.A.M. BOOK (Just John)
Every woman has one handed down to them by mothers & women of generations past. They will deny it and even claim you men insane for even mentioning it. They will take it's sinister hidden location with them to the grave before unveiling any of its secrets to the opposite sex. It is the W.A.M. Book (Women against Men). It holds the power to dictate the rise and fall of man's love (get it? rise and fall). Every excuse, every situation and every angle lies within. A entire chapter devoted to "Let's Just Be Friends", with such power in the hands of women…whatever shall we do?
MISSING OUT (Just John, Walter)
Written about some girls everyone may know, and if you don't, please take a number and don't crowd the counter please. Be on the lookout for a guest appearance by Brian "Psycho" Ward from Florida's premier rock power band IRIS CALLING for the guitar solo on this one.
GENITAL KICK (Just John)
Originally this music was written in collaboration with another Spring Hill band called PEANUTS & PITCHFORKS (who later became HIGH STRUNG who later again became PANGU who later yet again became HIGH STRUNG - everyone got that?). We have since altered the music just a pinch and added new lyrics to get everyone moving in a circle mosh pit.
R U MY LOVER OR R U JUST A CORPSE? (Just John)
Along with "Tourettes Syndrome", this one will have the censors drooling with anticipation of "parental advisory" sticker placement! Originally recorded with Panic Button, Walter breathed life back into this one. The song is about… well, uhh…. this track should be suggested at all family functions for sing-a-longs.
SELF-INDULGENT FUCK (Baron Von Cluke) Scooter, Walter, Just John)
This song came about rather abruptly when BVC wasn't getting his own way and Scott proceeded to call him a self-indulgent fuck, which gave way to the entire band jumping in and creating a spontaneous masterpiece. It is now rumored that everyone in TableTops is a self-indulgent fuck because they all want to do a solo in this song live and they don't care what instrument they grab to do it.
The year is now 2001. In the year 2000 the TableTops went back into the studio to start recording their first full-length CD. They completed 6 new songs and held on to them until now to combine them with 6 more recently recorded. We give you Scoliosis Inc. Interesting things happen to weird people. TableTops are the featured musical act on Todd Colbert's Team X-Treem Masters of Mayhem video. Rumors say they'll be on another future video later in 2001. With alot of successful shows in the Tampa Bay area, the TableTops have gotten opportunities to open for some of your favorite national metal acts like Crowbar, Nevermore, God Forbid and Opeth.
THE BAKER ACT (Just John)
It's true... do the research. Imagine the worst thing you could do to someone as a practical joke aside from filling out their new "change of address" forms at the local post office.
SHREDDING FLESH (Just John)
This song moves! This is great traditional thrash-metal. Dedicated to all vampires, and vampire wannabes that inhabit this strange plane of existence. For those in dire need of a tan, who squint at the slightest ray of sunshine, who get lost at white sales, who fix their blood-deficiency problem by getting pig's blood from the local butcher... you get the picture.
LANDSHARK (Just John)
Yet another addition to the TableTop's sci-fi collection. Landshark takes you, well a shark actually, where no shark has ever been before and lived to tell about it, if of course sharks could talk. Remember it's sci-fi people!
HIGHWAY IDIOTS (Just John)
Finally after playing this song live for years it makes it to a CD! Written for Panic Button, this song grabbed Walter's attention after he read the lyrics. This song is for everyone who hates driving on the road with idiots, and we all know just about everyone can relate to this song, if you can't, you obviously are one of the idiots.
TESTIFY (Just John)
This one is about those damn Dudley Boys in the WWF. We all watch it religiously, so we pay tribute to the table-wielding tag-team in true metal fashion. All of you who listen to Bubba in the morning on 98 Rock please let them know about the song, I'm sure everyone, including the wrestlers, will get a kick out of it.
GEORGE'S LAMENT (Just John)
This one is written about our engineer and owner of Panda Productions. Anyone who's ever recorded there will get the deep, heart-felt meaning. Basically, he re-writes all your lyrics in the key of ass.
SAMHAIN'S HOUSE 2000 (Just John)
We decided to re-record this classic from 1991. It's meaner, heavier and faster. Too bad we didn't do it this way the first time.
SLEEP-N-SNORE (Baron Von Cluke, Just John)
This one is about a certain person that a certain person dated that never seemed to do anything but sleep. She ended up to be a psycho anyway so I guess it's all for the best. What exactly is the connection with Steve from High Strung? The world may never know.
SLOW GORILLA (Just John, Baron Von Cluke)
All who know the legend of the Slow Gorilla knows what happened. The world will never be the same without his mighty presence to watch over us.
P-A-N (Just John, Walter, Bob, Drummer Mike)
This song we re-worked entirely since we first messed with it a few years ago. Those of you who heard it back then wouldn't recognize it except for the lyrics (which we changed a little too). This song has roots back when Joe was still in the band. It's an inside joke, in fact it's so inside sometimes we don't even get it.
I HATE YOU LARRY (Baron Von Cluke)
Another great short, timeless tune. It's about this guy Larry who we all hate.
IN MY WORLD (Anthrax)
Our first professional cover tune. We owe a lot to Anthrax, they have influenced us time and time again throughout our lives. Maybe we'll do enough Anthrax covers like they do Kiss ones. Their song appears on the album Persistence of Time. Yes, there was a video for it that MTV probably never played 'cause MTV sucks (I thought the M in MTV stood for music and not 'the real world') and it was even the song they jammed in Al Bundy's living room on Married With Children. Our hats off to you!
TableTops are nothing but a bunch of good friends who write songs about anything they damn well please. From humorous to horrifying, from catchy to heavy, TableTops deliver sounds that, somehow, appeal to many people. We would like to thank the following for inspiration; Weird Al Yankovic, Anthrax, S.O.D., & M.O.D. for getting us started. From a garage recording that found it's way into the hearts of people in more than a dozen states, to radio airplay from studio recordings and an international fan club spanning 4 countries, TableTops infect all who listen with their rare brand of musical enjoyment. From the silly tunes like "Apple Too", to the dedication of "Commando Too-Bad", the great sing-a-long "Sits Around The House" and to the raunchiness of "Lead Pipe", TableTops bring heavy metal music a new pulse to flow by.
